matt reed & jogging or blogging

IMG_0253Episode 57 welcomes Matt Reed, Vice President for Learning at Brookdale Community College and author of Confessions of a Community College Dean, which began in 2004. Confessions of a Community College Dean is hosted as a blog on Inside Higher Ed, and can also be found as a book! Matt works to post once a day, Monday through Friday to the blog, which is a lot of work! We talk about commitment, dedication, and deadlines, while also thinking about work-life balance. Matt sheds some light on what he does every day, and we also chat about the Tennessee Promise program and other legislations starting to take effect in higher education across the country.

annie mitchell & a million lougans

MitchellAnnie2_2014Episode 52 has less dirt on Lougan than we thought. We chatted with his past colleague, Annie Mitchell, current Vice President of Communications and Marketing at Wofford College. We talked about the difference between working at a two year college as compared to a four year college, as well as some new apps and social media platforms, like the completely appropriate-for-all-ages Fleek College Stories craze (hint: it’s not safe at all for work, or children). We recorded this episode on the morning of the Super Bowl, which is especially close to Annie’s heart, considering training camp for the Panthers is at Wofford. Annie shares a little about what her department is up to, including more measurable goals, and advertising in the mall.

Jim SargentEpisode 49 is with Jim Sargent, Assistant Director of Admissions and Coordinator of Transfer Admissions at Trinity College. Although his role is fairly new, Jim is not new to Trinity, previously working in Communications. We chat about transfer students and their needs, as well as resources on urban and suburban campuses. We tangent about Pokemon, cats, Star Wars, and rom coms, but get back on track when Jim explains Trinity’s new announcement; becoming test-optional.

keithryan hoganEpisode seventeen features Keith Warburg, Social Media and Content Manager and Ryan Hogan, Associate Director of Admissions at Valdosta State University. The guys talk (in southern accents) about their love of southern Georgia. We talk about QR codes and how they can be bad, or so bad they might be good, which leads to a discussion about admissions websites and gathering social media content from students. When it comes to admissions, Yik Yak is seen as a potentially negative platform, but the students at Valdosta turned it around, even providing some information for incoming students.

Nicole has been at Champlain for a long time, and it all started with a VHS tape; the one she received as marketing material from the college. She applied there, and only there, and has worked there ever since! We chat about the changing landscape of admissions and student applications, breaking down silos, and the shackles we wear each day; our Fitbits.

chris d’orso & the unexpected google search

hqdefaultEpisode seven features the closest thing we could get to a celebrity, Chris D’Orso, Assistant Director of Enrollment Communications at Stony Brook University. Aside from being “the Twitter guy” on campus, Chris co-hosts Admissions Live, part of the newly rebranded Higher Ed Live Network. We chat with Chris about breakfast foods, but more interestingly about social media on campus and how to balance the love for the place you work with the love you have for your alma mater. We also do a little digging and find something out about Chris that may be a little less known.
