andy brown & the first episode of 2018

Can you believe it? It’s 2018 and our first episode of the year stars Andy Brown, the director of media relations and online content at Kalamazoo College. On the show, we talked with Andy about the work he does and how he got to where he is. We also talk about the K-Plan, Kalamazoo’s four-part, integrated approach to liberal arts and science education through which students can customize their college experience.

This week we talk to Hope Cooper Buckner, the assistant director of communications at Belmont University.  Aside from dealing with Lougan on a regular basis, Hope is an integral part of Belmont’s Office of Communications that produces content and works with internal and external stakeholders to help manage the institutional brand. In May, Hope graduated with an M.Ed. in  nonprofit leadership and as her thesis studied the value of collegiate level mentorship experiences for women. That research inspired her to launch a new nonprofit called MentorHER which will provide psychosocial mentoring opportunities for women on college campuses.

Episode 82 welcomes Meaghan Milliorn Fikes, who sometimes goes by Meaghan Milliorn, the Online Marketing Manager at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Meaghan is an alumna of UALR, earning both her bachelor’s and master’s degree at the institution. We chat about the ups and downs of working in communications at an
institution, but agree that it’s a great department to work in. With March Madness underway, Lougan and Meaghan both compare NCAA stories, and Meaghan reflects on UALR’s visit to the big dance last year.

ebru kardan & the great outdoors

Ebru KardanWe’ve made it to episode 70 with Ebru Kardan, Director of External Affairs and Communications at the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. We first address exactly what that means, as higher ed titles tend to include a lot of extra words in job titles. There’s some nerdiness in this podcast, in the form of Star Trek talk and Ebru’s famous beer can cat. We also talk about Untappd and call out many past guests for the beers they were drinking at the time, and Jackie explains a class she’ll be taking later this month.
