Leigh Hall is a professor and the Wyoming Excellence in Higher Education Endowed Chair in Literacy Education at the University of Wyoming. While studying at the University of South Florida, she realized she wanted to be a teacher and create a better environment for future students. She got her master’s at Vanderbilt University then taught social studies for 6 years in Houston before getting her Ph. D at Michigan State University. Her research on literacy at the University of Wyoming aims to help elementary and middle school teachers around the state.

Junior Delgado is the director of the Career Center at Westfield State University, a mid-sized college in Westfield, Massachusetts. He started as the coordinator of senior programs 18 years ago and nine years later he started his current role. The center is staffed with 13 people who oversee career services for undergraduates, graduates, and alumni. Junior discusses how the university uses the platform Handshake to promote one on one connections and as a tool to host networking events. His signature lesson topic to prepare students is to have them think about life after Westfield.

Brian Keiser is the director of academic advising at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. Brian’s path has been a winding one. He originally went to college to study meteorology, and after several changes in major graduated with a degree in communications studies and a master’s in educational psychology. He’s currently pursuing his Ph.D. in child development and early childhood education, which he claims has nothing do with his job. On the show, we discuss Brian’s work leading Bridgeport’s advising and retention efforts that are funded by a Title III grant from the Department of Education.

Darren Stocker is an associate professor and program director at Cape Cod Community College in Massachusetts where he works with students who want to get into the field of criminal justice. After retiring from 20 years in law enforcement, Darren got into higher education. While in graduate school, it became clear to him that education was his next career move. Darren has done extensive work with learning management systems, and he talks with Lougan and Jackie about the pros and cons of discussion boards in an online classroom.

scott grant & letting students drive the bus

Scott Grant is an assistant professor in the College of Business at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. Scott, Jackie and Lougan discuss the value of general education courses and electives toward one’s future career path. Scott believes that teaching students starts with challenging them in ways that haven’t been before. One way he did this was by creating The Oiler 10, a student-run consulting agency. From this, he learned that teaching can go beyond the typical structure within higher education.
