The Registrar’s office is one that even those of us who have been in higher ed for a long time sometimes struggle to understand. The profession has come a long way from the days of long lines of students waiting to register for classes and taken even more importance during the pandemic. Doug McKenna, the University Registrar at George Mason University, joins us this week for a dose of Registrar 101 in the most fun way possible.

ben lamb & tiny crepes

Episode 56 is pretty tasty, with Ben Lamb, Assistant Director for Student Organizations and Involvement at Williams College. We quickly discover Ben’s crepe cafe, Oh Crepe! and Jackie’s love for these delicious desserts. While Jackie tries to wiggle her name onto the menu, we take the time to educate Lougan about New England. Ben discloses that there was a time at Williams College when there were simply too many clubs (is that even possible?) and how it was handled, as well as student run businesses that he oversees. We also talk about sports, and learn about Spikeball.

anna mahalak & our first periscope

Episode 36 is with Anna Mahalak, Coordinator of Planning and Outreach at George Washington University. Anna is a part time graduate student in GWU’s Higher Education Masters Program, and through her new position, gets an interesting glimpse at marketing, fundraising, and student affairs simultaneously. We talk about having senior leaders on campus having a strong presence on social media, such as GWU’s vice provost and dean of student affairs, whose Twitter presence is known throughout the college community. As we know, social media has the potential to greatly impact a large fundraising campaign, and Lougan and Anna swap ideas from recent initiatives they’ve tried out. We spiral down the rabbit hole of social media on campus, discussing commencement, Snapchat, and finally, Periscope.

aaron tomassini & the bush plane

Episode 35 welcomes Aaron Tomassini, a Graduate Student at Canisius College, back to the continental US from his summer long internship at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. We kick off with another ice breaker and learn about Lougan’s new cat Stewart, who used to be named Phoebe. Naturally, the conversation steers in the direction of moose, Denali, and the Northern Lights, as Aaron explains his unique opportunity in a state which is often confused for having only eskimos and ice fishing. Aaron’s summer internship with Conference Operations meant that he was faced with nearly 20 hours of daylight each day, and we chat about how each of us would be able to handle extended hours of light and darkness. Of course, we end the episode with an interesting history lesson from Lougan, about Icelandic history.

Episode 34 finally features Robin Brown, Assistant to the Office of Judicial Affairs at University of California Santa Barbara, after weeks of trying to connect! We chat about Robin’s title and using the word “judicial” in a department name, and what that can mean regarding students’ perception of the
Judicial system at their institution. Of course, now that we have the internet and, more specifically, social media, we talk about how that all comes in to play for current students. We disclose some deep secrets that may still exist about us on the internet today, and chat about twentysomething problems as compared to the older than twentysomething problems we face online. Although we are not a science podcast, we have another science lesson as it relates to the current drought in California, and we wrap the episode with Jackie singing, yet again.

Episode eighteen brings back Ryan and Keith from Valdosta State University, as the conclusion to episode seventeen. We continue the conversation about using social media as a part of admissions’ strategy, specifically how it is incorporated in the recruitment process. It can be a challenge for departments, especially when using social media, to determine what is important and timely, and it’s quickly determined that there’s more than one solution. We re-visit the topic of “class of” Facebook groups, being famous on social media, and how to engage alumni with cliche Instagram photos. We also reveal the history of the Higher Ed Social Podcast, and mock Jackie for being dreadfully behind in pop culture.

Episode eleven features another guest from Ithaca NY, Dave Cameron, Recruitment Marketing Web Content Producer at Ithaca College. We start off by chatting about getting used to the strange world of higher education, and how even though we want to be productive all the time, none of us can ever really do it. Higher Ed Eats makes a comeback, with Dave giving us some unique recipes and cooking techniques. We play another fun round of “what were you doing when,” noting that Jackie is too young to think about a time when she didn’t have an email address, and the incoming class was born right around the time of Lougan’s laser jet printer. We sum up the podcast with things that make Jackie cry, and listing the things we have to do, but maybe don’t want to do.

michael venturiello & figuring out the future

Episode three is all about growing up and figuring out the future. Michael Venturiello graduated from college and immediately entered the working world as an RD, but a year later switched gears, and cities. He now resides in Buffalo, New York and is slowly figuring out where exactly he wants to be. We talk about silos in higher ed, networking as a young professional, and Mike’s plans to travel abroad. We should warn you at home who are a bit squeamish that we talk about some bodily fluids, too.
