Chrissy Montelli is a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts- Amherst earning a Masters of Fine Arts in writing specializing in poetry. By day, she is a graduate assistant for Student Activities as programming counselor for events on campus. Currently, she is working on her thesis, a series of poems that examines mental illness and how it influences relationships. Chrissy decided to pursue her MFA in creative writing after realizing she didn’t want to teach high school English. She loves how sees the growth in the students she advises.

We’re back from vacation with Episode 63! This week we talk with Lisa Kelsay, Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts and Director of Academic Arts at Moraine Valley Community College. We begin the show by chatting about our morning commutes, and the struggles of choosing to live in a bustling city, or moving closer to campus. Jackie and Lisa both studied abroad in Italy during their undergraduate years, and talk about what they loved best about the experience. Lisa shares with us “a day in the life,” which, as we all know, is different depending on the day. She explains her current work, which includes dealing with parents and giving out exciting awards to her students. When this episode was recorded, Lisa was preparing for the Espirit de She Triathalon, which she has since completed, and shaved over 17 minutes off her race time from last year!

Episode 60 starts off with a political spin, a passion of Dr. Ann Marie Klotz, Dean of Campus Life at NYIT in Manhattan. Having just visited New York City, Lougan shares his experiences in the Big Apple, and naturally we talk about ramen, but not the cheap kind that you boil in college. We transition to talking about higher education, of course, and how residence life seems to be the gateway job to a career in the field. Ann Marie shares her view on what a work/life balance really is, and we end the show with a glass of Lemonade.

Episode 54 welcomes back Chris Barrows, Social Media and Mobile Product Administrator at NYU. As a group of Social Media managers, we chat about what it takes to create an effective social media team, whether it’s made up of students, staff, or both. Chris is challenged with a large campus, but makes it work with things like Slack and Skype, shrinking the distance between users. Chris is serving as the chair for the upcoming eduWeb conference, and we chat about the importance of attending any conference, and what it takes to be chair. If he wasn’t busy enough, Chris also hosts his own podcast, Why I Social, which chats with everyone, “from average Joe to CEO.”

We’re back with the big 4-0! We’ve been gone a while, and were asked by Dustin Ramsdell, one of our previous guests, to chat about our podcasts and do a little brainstorming. Well, we didn’t really talk much about the podcast, but we did talk about everything else. In a small town in Maine, Dustin talks about food choices, while Lougan expresses his deep-rooted love for Ramen. We talk a little about cats and sportsball, but then get to the good stuff – our podcasts! The conversation quickly digresses into podcasting in general, and then we talk about the future, and the future’s past, the present. Unsurprisingly, this ends the show with a full-out scifi geek session.

Episode 37 starts with a nice glass of wine and Aaron Rester, Assistant Vice President of Web Development at Roosevelt University. We “kick off” the episode discussing sports (get it?), and Jackie reflects on another loss for the Buffalo Bills. We also chat about work-life balance, specifically checking our work emails and discussing the most efficient way to submit work requests; through Snapchat or Vine. Apple has released its most recent iOS update, and we give a quick review on the highlights while talking about some photo features that we still don’t completely understand. We reflect on the movement of technology, failed demonstrations, and the internet, which leads to a discussion about the most effective website structure and navigation for an educational institution. And, we attempt to answer the question: which is better, audience-based, or task-based navigation?

Episode 33 starts off with an ice breaker, introducing Lucky Luke Haumesser, Assistant Director of Student Activities and Governments at the University at Buffalo. After our ice breaker session, we’re comfortable enough with each other to argue about the correct pronunciation of ‘gif,” and make animal noises. Move in week is coming up, and in his new role outside of Residence Life for the first time, Luke talks about the Welcome Week events that he’s helping to plan – including the overhead “interlocking UB” photo, break dancing, and all night pancakes. We also talk about IKEA and Home Depot, in part to celebrate Luke’s transition from a live-on position to his own apartment.

tom priester & the correctional facility

Episode 29 kicks off with Dr. Tom Priester, Director of Transitional Studies at Genesee Community College, talking about a fun new way to use all those free college shirts we get from campus events. Coming off the Fourth of July holiday weekend, we chat about summertime, BBQ, and research laws regarding owning fireworks and firing them off. We do talk Higher Ed, though, when Tom brings up his summer project: the final edits on his textbook, Foundations of Academic Success: Words of Wisdom, which will be released soon as an open-source textbook through Open SUNY. We end the show with an incredibly interesting story from Tom, as he explained how he ended up in Attica Correctional Facility, and will be heading back.

Episode 26 is with Jon-Stephen Stansel, Social Media Coordinator at Texas State University. JS just started this new job, and had a very interesting journey bringing him to Texas. We chat about this unique path, and get a language lesson along the way. Lougan geeks out a little bit about Japanese culture and language, and we also talk about JS’ introduction to social media in his previous position while discussing its evolution. In his new job, JS works with a larger team, allowing him to focus on social media strategy, something that we decide has both pros and cons. We close the podcast with a mini Apple Watch review, getting JS’ take on it as well.

Episode 23 faces some technical difficulties, but we conquer them! We chat with Kimberly White, Internship Coordinator at Birmingham Southern College for one year and two days. Kimberly has a lot of Birmingham pride, which is evident in her blog. We talk with Kimberly about the Birmingham Bloggers as well as how she balances personal and professional content in her own blog. Kimberly has just begun a “Leadership Fridays” Series on her blog as well, which inspires a discussion about how each of us can contribute to the discussion in our own, strong way. We also talk about Pinterest, even though Lougan doesn’t like it very much.
