wimer alberto & s02e01

10996000_731359353656880_5555353777226381225_nEpisode 46 is the first episode of season 2! We celebrate with Wimer Alberto, currently serving as the Senior Coordinator of Occupancy Management and Housing Operations at Arizona State University, but will soon be transitioning to Assistant Director for Guest and Conference Services. Because of his new role, we talk about the impact of conferences and other resources on campus, which universities are now beginning to take advantage of. With the recent Star Wars movie release, Lougan nerds out (a lot) especially because Jackie has finally seen a Star Wars movie! We close the show by talking about how our own studies shaped the way we view ourselves on our campuses, as well as Wimer’s post-graduate dreams.

dustin ramsdell & the attack of the empire strikes back into darkness

RU-Headshot_LM2_7761We’re back with the big 4-0! We’ve been gone a while, and were asked by Dustin Ramsdell, one of our previous guests, to chat about our podcasts and do a little brainstorming. Well, we didn’t really talk much about the podcast, but we did talk about everything else. In a small town in Maine, Dustin talks about food choices, while Lougan expresses his deep-rooted love for Ramen. We talk a little about cats and sportsball, but then get to the good stuff – our podcasts! The conversation quickly digresses into podcasting in general, and then we talk about the future, and the future’s past, the present. Unsurprisingly, this ends the show with a full-out scifi geek session.

aaron tomassini & the bush plane

11698694_10207458147476471_545012241211356905_nEpisode 35 welcomes Aaron Tomassini, a Graduate Student at Canisius College, back to the continental US from his summer long internship at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. We kick off with another ice breaker and learn about Lougan’s new cat Stewart, who used to be named Phoebe. Naturally, the conversation steers in the direction of moose, Denali, and the Northern Lights, as Aaron explains his unique opportunity in a state which is often confused for having only eskimos and ice fishing. Aaron’s summer internship with Conference Operations meant that he was faced with nearly 20 hours of daylight each day, and we chat about how each of us would be able to handle extended hours of light and darkness. Of course, we end the episode with an interesting history lesson from Lougan, about Icelandic history.

luke haumesser & the beepy thing

Baird Point Head ShotEpisode 33 starts off with an ice breaker, introducing Lucky Luke Haumesser, Assistant Director of Student Activities and Governments at the University at Buffalo. After our ice breaker session, we’re comfortable enough with each other to argue about the correct pronunciation of ‘gif,” and make animal noises. Move in week is coming up, and in his new role outside of Residence Life for the first time, Luke talks about the Welcome Week events that he’s helping to plan – including the overhead “interlocking UB” photo, break dancing, and all night pancakes. We also talk about IKEA and Home Depot, in part to celebrate Luke’s transition from a live-on position to his own apartment.

matt bloomingdale, valerie heruska & the illegal turtle

IMG_3027We’re back from vacation with episode 30, welcoming the hosts of the Professional Reputations Aside Podcast; Matt Bloomingdale, Assistant Director of Residence Life at Georgia Tech, and Valerie Heruska, Assistant Director for Residence Life for Academic Initiatives and Services at Indiana University Bloomington. We talk a lot about the United States, especially the New England area along the coast, discussing seafood of all kinds (chowder, pronounced chow-dah, too). Naturally, our conversation weaves its way down a path of comparing the Higher Ed Social Podcast to the Professional Reputations Aside Podcast, both of which you should download and subscribe to, right now. We discuss preparation, recording, flounders, and successes, and reveal some behind-the-scenes info about the show. On a higher education related note, we talk about weird state laws that effect our students, and Lougan has a seriously innocent slip of the tongue, doesn’t realize it and meant absolutely nothing by it.

marci walton & the batmobile

IMG_0120Episode 28 has an intense start with Marci Walton, Assistant Director for Academic Support and Learning Communities for Loyola University Chicago Residence Life, about why living off campus is so expensive. Although she now has to pay rent, it’s clear that her bingo winnings cover the cost. Don’t worry, we talk about the strategy of having multiple bingo cards – and yes, there is one. We also talk about what it’s like to live in Chicago (bad weather and all), and discuss Marci’s experience with four new directors in her department, while exploring a new initiative with Learning Communities on campus.
